& Black Futures Farm

Black Food Sovereignty Coalition and Black Futures Farm are based in the PNW, with its center in Portland. Its three key goals are centered around food, place, and wealth. For food, they seek to grow and provide “healthy, culturally-relevant” food to local black communities, as well as assist in the development of a more sustainable, regenerative, self-reliant, and resilient food system. This work is grounded in the place, and so BFSC works to ensure their outreach, education, advocacy, and community building is place-specific, responding to the witnessed needs of the Black communities they serve. They also recognize that both within the American food system and outside of it, there are massive barriers to wealth creation for black people and communities and seek to remove these barriers by strategizing on marketing techniques that benefit Black food suppliers, distributors, and consumers. They seek to maintain and pass on black cultural food traditions and build networks of farms in the PNW while growing food and reconnecting to the land. They have two main farms, Black Futures Farm and Howell Territorial Farm, with work and educational opportunities at each.
